Planting New Hedges

You’ll need to decide whether your garden design is formal or informal, the size that you want your hedge to be and choose your plant type preference.

Although most hedges are hardy enough to be planted at any time of year, the best time for planting is in Autumn. Autumn has warmer soil temperatures than Spring and try avoid summer planting and the risk of burning your new hedge due to extreme heat.

Formal and Informal hedge types include Boxwood, Gardenia, Japonica, Jojoba, Juniper, Lilly Pilly, Murraya, Myrtle, Natal Plum, Photinia, Viburnum, Waxleaf Privet and Xylosma.

Informal hedge type options include Arborvitae, Chihuahuan Sage, Heavenly Bamboo, Hop Bush, Oleander, Pomegranate and Texas Ranger.
